The statue of Christ The Redeemer, built in 1931, located at the top of Corcovado Hill, is the world wide known symbol of Brazil and Rio de Janeiro. The Statue of Christ stands 30 meters high (100 feet), covered in a mosaic of soapstone. The best way to get there is by the Corcovado train. The Corcovado Railway was the first eletricfied Brazilian railroad. Inaugurated in October 9th, 1884, it’s even older than the monument of Christ. Besides, it was this same train that carried for a period of four years the parts of the statue to be mounted at the top of the hill.

Sugar Loaf mountain is one of Rio's most famous landmarks, gives a dramatic perspective on the natural beauty of the "Cidade Maravilhosa", as the city is known. From the top Sugar Loaf are wonderful views of the Guanabara Bay with the Botafogo beach to the North and Copacabana to the South, and Rio proper in-between. 2004

View from the Corcovado; Impanema beach, Lago Rodrigo de Freitas, the "Jockey Club" hoarse track, Dois Iramos Hill and the coastal highrises of Leblon, an affluent neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro, just west of Ipanema,The neighborhood has the highest land prices of Brazil and Latin America. Consequently, the many of the once beautiful, old, houses in the neighborhood were torn down to make way for high-rise apartments. Most of Leblon's charm was destroyed with the destruction of its houses, which also occurred in Ipanema and Copacabana. 2004

Maracanã stadium, once the world's highest capacity football (soccer) venue, able to hold nearly 199,000 people, as it did the World Cup final of 1950. Now with seating for all capacity is 95,000 fans; it will eventually hold around 120,000 people. It will host the final match of 2014 FIFA World Cup and the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and football matches of the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. 2004
